Caatinga and Archaeology
The Seridó shelters the caatinga, unique biome in the world, exclusively brazilian. The caatinga is a type of vegetal formation with well defined characteristics: low trees and bushes that, in general, lose their foliage in the dry season. During the first few rains in the beginning of the year, the caatinga loses its rude aspect and quickly becomes green and flowery.
In the caatinga from the Seridó, there are many important archaeological sites, unequivocal signs of an ancient culture. According to Câmara Cascudo, the indians called the rocks with letters, drawings and geometric figures found in the rocks and caves of the countryside "itacoatiara".
