Currais Novos

Mountain ranges, peaks, dams, rivers, barrages and lakes will bring more adrenaline to your trip through the Seridó Region, with the practice of extreme sports: rappelling at the Pico do Totoró, at the Serra do Chapéu and at the Pedra do Cruzeiro; there's mountain trekking at the hills of Catunda, Acauã and Piauí. The Brejuí, and ancient mine of scheelite, now disactivated, with 60 kilometers of tunnels and galleries, offers a spectacle of colors, provided by the chips of mineral on the rocks. The rock formations grow with exhuberance, making the town known for its many rocks, that are craftly made, revealing fascinating pieces.

On art-crafts, the highlights are the production of ornamental jars, filters made from adobe and the production of purses and carpets from straw. The party of the patron of the city, Nossa Senhora de Sant'Ana, in July, is another highlight of the town. Located at Oriental Seridó, on the border with the state of Paraíba, Currais Novos has 41 thousand inhabitants. Ancient village of Canindé and Janduí indians, its name derives from the construction, by the Col. Cipriano Lopes Galvão, of three barns at the location, around 1755, which stimulated the population. The average temperature during the year is of 28ºC.
