Nascente do Rio Potengi - Cerro Corá
The Seridó is an outdoor laboratory.
Here, all the experiences are possible and many discoveries are made. Teachers and students have, in direct contact with people and nature, the best opportunity of knowing more about the natural, historical and cultural aspects of the entire region. The limit to the use of the resources and for the educational potential of the scenery and everyday life of the people from the Seridó depends only on your creativity. In this tour, we will approach aspects connected to the use and the attainment of our most important natural resource: water.
1st Day - Friday
NATAL / CERRO CORÁ
CURRAIS NOVOS / ACARI
Leaves from Natal with destination to the city of Cerro Corá. In Cerro Corá, we will see the springs of the main river of the State,the
Rio Potengi. To reach the first waters that helped form the immense drainning system, we'll take a pau-de-arar vehicle until the beginning of the track, where we initiate a short walk. Lunch will be served at the Chã da Divisão Farm. The hosting family knows how to take benefits from the water. Thanks to that, there is abundance in tropical fruits like the cashew. After lunch, we have right to a break in the hammocks of the den. In the afternoon, we follow on to the city of Currais Novos, where we will visit the community of Totoró. There, we get to see a bit of the day-to-day life of some families and how the use the wells to get water during the entire year. Then, we go on to Acari, where we spend the night. Dinner in selected restaurant.
2nd Day - Saturday
ACARAI / CAICÓ
After breakfast, check-out from the hotel. We go to the
Serra da Lagoa Seca. From there, its possible to see the draining system that makes up the Gargalheiras Dam, among them the Acauã river, that springs in the state of Paraíba. We leave in the direction of the
Poço do Arthur, place with itaquatiara inscriptions that register the passage of indians and pre-historic civilizations through the area. In this visit, we can identify characteristics that justify the choice of that particular place as shelter. One of them is the presence of a course of perene water. We can also observe the changes that occur in the Acauã River, after the construction of the Gargalheiras Dam. Lunch in selected restaurant. After lunch, we'll visit the Colony of Fishermen of the Gargalheiras Dam, where we will see some of the techniques used in fishing, and listen to what the fishermen have to say about the quantity of fish, the benefits and negative impacts caused by the dam. At the end of the afternoon, we will take a boat ride to the dam to see how the structure of water holding system was built and how such a grandious construction was planned. We head on later to Caicó, where we sleep. Dinner and lodging in selected places.
3rd Day - Sunday
CAICÓ / NATAL
We wake up early for an interesting activity. After breakfast, we go the the São Bernardo mountain range, where we will learn techniques about obtaining water from nature. Besides the natural beauty of the place, we get to see the place with the most concentration of dams per square meter in the Seridó. Our visit will be accompanied by local inhabitants who will give statements about the importance of the construction of new dams. Lunch in selected restaurant. In the beginning of the afternoon, we go to the House of Culture of Caicó, where some dynamics about the acquired information from the whole trip will be presented. Check-out from the hotel. Return to Natal. End of our services.
